Benson gets out of its funk

Braves earn a three-set set victory at Montevideo in preparation for impending playoffs

MONTEVIDEO — Trying to get out of a funk before the section playoffs start, Benson snapped a four-game losing streak and got its first West Central Conference win since Sept. 12 on Tuesday with a three-set win over Montevideo, 25-21, 27-25, 26-24.

The Braves had effective offensive nights from Claire Ricard and Mariah Ahrndt.

Ricard was 25 of 28 hitting with a match-high 11 kills while also coming through with 1-1/2 blocks. Ahrndt was nearly as effective, going 16 of 21 on attacks with six kills while also scooping up seven digs. Rachel Berens also had six kills, six digs and a pair of ace serves while Abbie Mitteness was the leader of Benson’s back row with 17 digs.

Thunder Hawks blockers Megan Anderson and Avery Koenen were able to slow down Benson’s hitters at times as both finished the night with three ace blocks.

Koenen also came up with a team-best seven kills. Tegan Marty led a trio of T-Hawks with double-digit digs with 19.

Both teams resume play Thursday as Benson has its home finale against Minnewaska. Montevideo is back at home against Morris/Chokio-Alberta.

After a four-set loss Monday, Willmar rebounded with a 25-12, 25-17, 25-18 win Tuesday over Rocori.

“The girls just played, in every aspect of the game, consistently and were enthusiastic for three sets straight,” Willmar head coach Traci Grussing said. “(We) kept our energy, so that’s good.

“We’ve had some problems recovering when we make mistakes and tonight we didn’t let mistakes phase us.”

NLS moves to 5-1 in the Wright County West Division. Annandale falls to 4-2 in the WCC West.
