Benson/KMS falls to Waseca, Staples-Motley

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg tennis team lost twice Tuesday, both by 5-2 scores, to bow out of the Class A girls state girls tennis meet.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg tennis team lost twice Tuesday, both by 5-2 scores, to bow out of the Class A girls state girls tennis meet.

Waseca beat the Braves in the quarterfinals and then Staples-Motley eliminated the Section 5A champion in the consolation semifinal, both at Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center.

Benson/KMS finished the season 22-2.

The Braves will be represented in the individual portion of the tournament by Abby Fragodt in singles and Catherine James and Lauren Alsaker in doubless. The individuals are Thursday and Friday. Fragodt, who placed fifth in singles last year, enters her fourth straight year at state individually. She was beaten in her team match against Staples-Motley, leaving her with a 32-2 record this season in singles and a 170-19 career record in singles and doubles.

Benson/KMS was participating in the state meet for the second straight year and third time in the last four years.

Consolation semifinal

Staples-Motley 5, Benson/KMS 2

The Braves were swept at singles. At No. 1, the Cardinals' Abby Edin nipped Abby Fragodt 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Benson/KMS pulled out points at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, both in tight finishes. Ginger Breen-Hillary Wilts won in three sets at second doubles while Datrianna Jensen-Amber Wadsworth at 3-doubles won 7-5, 6-3.

The Braves pushed hard to get points at doubles, but couldn't break out in two first-set losses. Ginger Breen and Hillary Wilts lost the first set of their 2-doubles match 7-5 and Datriana Jensen and Amber Laten took their first set in 3-doubles to a tiebreaker, but lost 8-6.

Abby Fragodt won her 1-singles match in straight sets, as did Sara Rajewsky at 4-singles.
