ST. PETER -- Benson/KMS and New London-Spicer both lost in the semifinals of the Section 5A girls team tennis tournament Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Benson/KMS (19-5), the two-time defending section champions, lost to Annandale 5-2.
New London-Spicer fell to Glencoe-Silver Lake 5-2.
The last time an area team didn't win the section title was 2005.
Benson/KMS was tied 2-2 in its dual with Annandale and had 4-1 leads in two matches, but the Cardinals won both sets 7-5.

The individual tournament begins Oct. 19.

The Wildcats (10-8) picked up a singles win from Amanda Radel and a doubles win from Steph Haats and Kristin Lewis.
Radel had to go to a second-set tiebreaker to win her 1-singles match over Jackie Stifter 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Haats and Lewis took their 3-doubles match in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

Emily Reuss picked up the hardest-earned point for Benson/KMS, winning two 7-5 sets after falling behind her 4-singles match, 3-6.
Hillary Wilts and Ginger Breen also had a 7-5 set in their 2-doubles match, then won the second set, 6-3.
