BENSON -- Benson thwarted Lac qui Parle Valley's bid for the West Central South Conference football title with a 7-6 win Wednesday.
The Eagles (5-2, 6-2) had opportunities to score, but Benson (3-4, 3-5) stood its ground when needed.
LQPV had the ball with 2:41 left on a fourth-and-five at the Benson 35-yard line. Quarterback Dylan Erickson scrambled, looking for an open receiver, but didn't find one and took off running. He was forced out just short of the first-down marker by Scott Bridgland and the Braves ran out the clock.
The Braves also stopped LQPV in the second quarter from the one-yard line, then forced a fumble back to the 22. Then, after J.D. Struxness scored the Eagles' only TD, the extra-point attempt was foiled after a high snap went right to kicker Brandon Bornhorst, who was stopped before converting a two-point attempt.
Cody Jaeger, who ran the ball 27 times for Benson, scored on a one-yard touchdown run. He also completed 10-of-19 passes for 87 yards. Derek Hillern recorded 94 yards rushing.

LQPV was held to 94 yards rushing and 90 passing. The Eagles had four turnovers.
