BOLD falls to Springfield in Section 2A

Fourth-seeded Tigers surprise No. 1 Warriors, 6-4

BIRD ISLAND — Hoping to defend its 2019 Class A state baseball title, BOLD will have to work through the elimination bracket.

Thanks to a four-run top of the sixth inning, fourth-seeded Springfield upset top-seeded BOLD, 6-4, at Lions Memorial Park.

The Tigers’ six hits came from six players. Mason Leonard hit a two-run home run in the first as he finished the day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brenden Buerkle went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. On the mound, Jakob Nachreiner got the win after five innings of work while Tori Helget picked up the save.

Braeden Tersteeg paced BOLD’s offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Tate Sheehan finished 2-for-2 with a run. Aidan Elfering and Tim Peppel both collected a hit apiece.

Avery Herdina started the game for the Warriors, striking out six over five innings. Elfering was hit with the loss after two innings of relief.

The Warriors face Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Saturday at ISG Field in Mankato.

Fairmont 2

Three runs scored in the fifth inning pushed Paynesville to a win at Marshall in a Section 3AA elimination game.

Paynesville advances to play Pipestone at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Legion Field in Marshall. Pipestone remained alive with a7-3 victory over Minnewaska. If Paynesville beats the Arrows, there’s a second game for the Bulldogs at 5 p.m.

Minnewaska 3

Pipestone scored two runs to start the game at Marshall before allowing three runs in the fourth. Pipestone scored four runs in the fifth and one in the fifth to take the win, eliminating Minnewaska from the playoffs.

Dawson Kellen got the complete-game pitching win for the Arrows, striking out three and walking none. He scattered eight hits and allowed three earned runs.

Sam Hested and Hunter Johnson each had two hits for the Lakers.

Howard Lake Waverly Winsted pitcher Noah Bush earned 12 strikeouts in seven innings, eliminating Litchfield 4-1 at Litchfield.

Litchfield ends its season at 16-7.

Maverick Conn singled home Carter Amland with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning for Lac qui Parle Valley in its walk-off win over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove at Milroy.

The Eagles (11-9) advance to play Yellow Medicine East at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Milroy.

Yellow Medicine East scored five runs in the third to push its lead to six before giving up a run in the fourth. YME scored a run in the sixth before giving up two runs to Wabasso in the sixth.

Caleb Jans earned the win with 5⅔ innings pitched.

Alex Call struck out 13 in a complete-game effort, which top-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg needed in a one-run win over No. 3 Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Isaac Rudningen scored on a groundout by Isaac Call.

Rudningen, Alex Cal and Wylee Lottman each had a hit for KMS, with Call supplying a double.

Payton Winter had a strong outing on the rubber for the Jaguars, striking out five with three hits and no walks allowed in 5-1/3 innings. Five different players had hits for the Jaguars in the losing effort.

The Fighting Saintsl take on New York Mills, the North sub-section’s top team, for a spot in the section championship game. That game is set for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at New York Mills.

In the elimination bracket, BBE will try to keep its season alive against Browerville/Eagle Valley at 2:30 p.m. in New York Mills. The winner plays again at 4:30 p.m. in Bluffton against the winner of Ashby vs. Upsala/Swanville.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg impressed in its Section 6A-South opener as the top-seeded Fighting Saints beat No. 4 Border West in Ortonville.

Hunter Wilts, Jaiden Henjum and Jared Cortez each had two hits for KMS. Wilts scored twice, drove in a run and had a stolen base, Cortez had a double and two runs scored, and Henjum finished with a double and a run.

Wylee Lottman started the game for the Fighting Saints, striking out six over six innings of work.

Third-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa knocked off No. 2 Upsala/Swanville Area in the Section 6A-South playoffs at Clinton.

Payton Winter led the Jaguars’ offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Blaine Fischer added two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Gavin Kampsen had a hit, a run and an RBI.

On the mound, Wyatt Steffenson threw a one-hitter for BBE, striking out four.
