HUTCHINSON - The Willmar boys basketball team is getting closer but still can’t find a way over the top.
On Thursday, the Cardinals played a stronger second half but couldn’t overcome a nine-point halftime deficit and fell to Hutchinson 60-55 in a non-conference game.
The Cardinals pulled within three points in the second half but couldn’t maintain their momentum, said Willmar head coach Steve Grove.
“We gave up some offensive rebounds and some easy buckets when we tried to pressure them,” Grove said. “But we had better results tonight, as to how we played.”
Austin Grove led the Cards with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Jay Coquyt finished with 10 points, hitting two of Willmar’s three 3-point shots. L. Hussein had nine points.
The Cardinals play their third-straight road game at St. Cloud Tech at 7:30 p.m. today.
