Boys Basketball: Melrose upends NLS

NEW LONDON -- Carter Sawyer scored Melrose's last four points to hand New London-Spicer an 83-82 West Central North Conference boys basketball loss Tuesday.

NEW LONDON -- Carter Sawyer scored Melrose's last four points to hand New London-Spicer an 83-82 West Central North Conference boys basketball loss Tuesday.

The Wildcats (9-2, 13-6) led 82-79 when Sawyer, who finished with 14 points, scored on a layup with 35 seconds left. NLS missed two free throws on its next possession, then Sawyer was fouled and sank both of his attempt from the foul line.

NLS led 54-43 in a high-scoring first half, but cooled off in the second half and scored only 28 points.

Joey Dreier paced the Wildcats with 26 points, including eight 3-pointers. Jayme Moten had 14 points and 12 assists, Austin Cuka 14 points and Brandon Zylstra 13 points and seven rebounds. Aaron Ruter did not score, but had seven assists and seven steals.

Scottie Stone led Melrose (6-5, 10-9) with 16 points, Isaac Sawyer also had 14 points.

NLS beat Melrose 72-69 in the first meeting on Dec. 21 in Melrose.
