Boys Basketball: Morris/CA tops NLS in overtime

MORRIS -- Morris/Chokio-Alberta made 6 of 8 free throws and got a three-pointer from Cory Hennen in overtime to upend top-ranked New London-Spicer 62-58 Friday in the West Central Interconference championship.

The South champion Tigers (23-2) avenged an 89-68 loss to the North champion Wildcats, who had their 17-game winning streak snapped, on Feb. 13 in New London.

Hennen led the No. 9 Tigers with 17 points with Alex Erickson following with 16 and Lincoln Arnold 13.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta didn't have a lead in the game until 1:37 in the second half on the second free throw by Hennen. Alex Erickson made two more free throws to give the Tigers a 53-50 lead.

NLS (25-2) got the ball with 7.2 seconds left and drove the ball upcourt and Jayme Moten sank a three-pointer before the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Moten made five treys and led NLS with 19 points. Aaron Johnson added 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Tigers' defensive pressure in the first half forced 11 Wildcat turnovers, then NLS took better care of the ball in the second half, committing only three turnovers. But NLS led 25-17 at halftime while the Tigers outscored the Wildcats 36-28 in the second half.

Eight players combined to make 15 three-pointers for Litchfield as the Dragons ended the season by blowing out their Highway 12 neighbors to the east.

Dominic Devine drained four treys en route to scoring a game-high 27 points for Litchfield, which shot 50 percent from the field, including going 15-for-25 from beyond the arc. Eric Hulterstrum knocked down three 3-pointers and Derek Koll netted 13 points. Devine also grabbed 13 rebounds.
