Boys Basketball: NLS routs Pierz in 6AA-West

COLLEGEVILLE -- New London-Spicer broke open its Section 6AA-East semifinal boys basketball game with a 21-2 run to start the second half en route to a 79-46 win over Pierz Saturday at St. John's University.

The Wildcats (27-2), who will face Albany for the subsection title at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's, held a 37-25 halftime lead, thanks to five of their nine 3-pointers. Jayme Moten sank three in first 18 minutes and canned a total of five.

The big run to start the second half took the win out of Pierz's sails as the Pioneers scored only 21 points.

Moten finished with a game-high 22 points. Justin Zylstra followed with 17 and Erik Tengwall recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Aaron Jenny contributed nine points and five rebounds.

Andy Kretschmar paced the Pioneers with 12 points and he also hooked six rebounds.

Albany defeated Melrose 81-60 in its semifinal game on Saturday.

It will be the third meeting of the season for New London-Spicer and Albany, rivals in the West Central North Conference. NLS, which won the conference with a perfect 16-0 mark, beat the Huskies 68-55 on Jan. 12 in Albany and 84-78 on Feb. 18 n New London.
