SAUK CENTRE - Tony Kallevig and Hunter Mottinger, both seniors, qualified for the state tournament as the Willmar Cardinals finished runner-up to the Buffalo Bison on Wednesday.
Behind the red-hot Bison (299-300-599) was a three-team pack led by the Cardinals (305-303-608), and then Moorhead (306-303-309) and Brainerd (309-301-310). Kallevig finished in a three-way tie for second at 75-72-147. Mottinger tied for fifth with at 76-72-148.
The Bisons’ Hunter Bruhn shot one over par 74-71-145 to lead all scorers.
Willmar took home the runner-up trophy for its best finish since a second-place in Section 2AA in 2006.
Kallevig was co-medalist last year in this tournament when Willmar took third place.

Also scoring for the Cardinals on Day 2 were Riley Grabow 78, Levi Hauser 81 (who qualified for state last year as an eighth-grader) and Zach Berget and Brady Damhof, both 170.
