FERGUS FALLS - An overtime goal by Fergus Falls’ Joe Nathe ended the Willmar boys hockey team’s season, 3-2, in the first round of the Section 6A tournament on Tuesday.
The Cardinals finished the year 13-12-1.
The Otters and Cards both scored single goals in the first and second periods and neither team managed a tally in the third.
Nathe scored unassisted at 12:15 of the overtime period.
“We had some really good looked,” said Willmar head coach Dan Tollefson, “they had some really good looks in the third and in overtime but (goalie Joey Benson) made some nice saves before they got that last one. In the playoffs, it’s a bounce of a puck sometimes. They got the bounce tonight and we didn’t get the bounce.”
Willmar’s Zech Streed opened the scoring in assists by Evan VanDenEinde and Preston Peterson at 5:04 of the first period, but the Otters countered about 90 seconds later when Sam Rausch connected on an assist by Colton Buseth.
Fergus Falls took a 2-1 lead on Jesse Ketonen’s power play goal at 8:29 of the second period, but the Cards’ Hunter Schneider scored unassisted at 14:55 of the second to tie it again.
Benson made 25 saves but couldn’t get the one that sent the Otters into the section semifinals.
“I thought we had a good year,” Tollefson said. “Our kids really improved and you could see that when we played good games against some high-powered teams. Any time you get 13 wins, it’s a pretty good year.”
