FAIRMONT — The Willmar boys hockey team saw its season end with a 4-1 loss to Fairmont on Tuesday night at Martin County Arena.
Fairmont was the eighth seed in Section 3A. Willmar was the ninth seed. Tuesday’s contest was a play-in game.
Fairmont (6-19) faces top-seeded Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Thursday at Burich Arena in the Section 3A quarterfinals.
Willmar finishes 2-23-1.

Derek Pesta had two goals and two assists as second-seeded Alexandria skates past seventh-seeded Morris/Benson Area at the Runestone Community Center.
Alexandria led 4-0 after the first period.
Brady Loge scored the Storm’s lone goal at 4:35 of the second period. The Cardinals answered 12 seconds later when Pesta got his second goal of the game.
Alexandria plays No. 3 Little Falls at 7 p.m. Saturday at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex in the section semifinals. Little Falls beat sixth-seeded Sartell 6-0.

Joel Sowada’s goal at 4:59 of overtime lifted second-seeded River Lakes past third-seeded Fergus Falls in Paynesville.
Sowada scored from the point. Ethan Howard’s shot went wide and was picked up by Griffin Duininck, who fed Sowada with the game-winner.

River Lakes winner plays top-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral at 4 p.m. Saturday at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex in the section semifinals. Cathedral, the defending state champion, beat ninth-seeded Prairie Centre, 11-1.
