Boys hockey: Willmar falls to Alex in finale

ALEXANDRIA -- Willmar got off to a slow start and ended up losing to Alexandria at the Runestone Center on Friday 5-2 to conclude the schedule for both teams.

In Section 3A seeded released Friday, Willmar (11-12-1) is the No. 2 seed and has a bye to Thursday’s quarterfinal round when the Cardinals will host the winner of Tuesdays’ play-in matching No. 10 Redwood Valley at No. 7 Windom. Luverne is the No. 1 seed, New Ulm three and Hutchinson four.

Alexandria, which opens 8A play on Thursday, came out hard controlling play and mounting a 2-0 first period advantage on goals by Matt Resch and Ryan Marciniak shorthanded.

Hunter Mottinger and Austin Smith got the Willmar goals but Alexandria displayed more speed and never let the visitors’ offense fully ignite.

Brainerd (10-1-1) beat Sauk Rapids 5-1 in a two-point game giving the Warriors 13.5 points to 12.5 for Alexandria (12-1-1).
