ALEXANDRIA - The entire Willmar boys soccer team played and many contributed in the Cardinals’ 5-0 Central Lakes Conference win over Alexandria on Monday on the turf.
Four players scored Willmar’s goals and five players notched assists as the Cardinals improved to 5-2-2 in the CLC and 9-3-2 overall.
“We don’t have any one main scoring threat,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “We’re pretty balanced.”
David Gomez scored the game-winner in the 17th minute on an assist from David Aguilar. Teza Harrison, recently moved up from the defensive end to midfield, scored 20 minutes later on an assist from Nick McLouth as Willmar built a 2-0 halftime lead.
Kyle Hisken, McLouth and Gomez would score second-half goals as Willmar pulled away.
“It was one of those nights where everything went our way,” Winter said. “Every ball bounced our way and I think this is a team that enjoys playing on turf. We got back to our great passing form.”
The Cardinals’ defense was stout, as well, limiting Alexandria to five shots on goal, all of which goalie Manny Obregon handled deftly.
Willmar also handled difficult weather conditions. Rain fell earlier in the day and a cross wind blew throughout the game, Winter said.
Despite the cold and wind, our guys came to play,” he said.
Willmar plays host to St. Cloud Tech at 5 p.m. today at Kennedy Field before closing out the regular season at Brainerd on Thursday.
