WILLMAR - The Willmar boys soccer team stormed Mankato West after a 90-minute rain delay on Saturday, but the Scarlets held on and won 3-2 at Kennedy Field.
The Scarlets built a 3-1 lead in the first half, before the delay. Willmar head coach Jeff Winter said the Cardinals dominated the action after that, with Christian Vallecillo scoring on an assist from Kunil Ismail to pull the Cards within a goal in the 58th minute.
But Willmar’s Nick McLouth hit goal posts twice in the final minute against a Scarlets team that is ranked No. 1 in the state in Minnesota-Scores.net’s QRF rating system.
The Cards will face another tough test on Tuesday, traveling to play St. Cloud Apollo at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Apollo leads the Central Lakes Conference with a 5-0-2 record and the Eagles are 8-0-2 overall. Willmar is 3-1-2 in the CLC and 7-2-2 overall.
