Boys soccer: Cards escape Rocori, 2-1
Willmar has started its busy week with a road victory.
The Willmar boys soccer team kicked off its four-game week with a victory over Central Lakes Conference foe Rocori at Cold Spring.
Down 1-0 in the first half, the Cardinals were able to score two unanswered goals to win their tightest match so far this season.
Heading into Monday’s game, Willmar outscored opponents 34-4.
“Tonight was one of those times where you have a good team that just plays through a bad night,” said Cardinals head coach Jeff Winter. “With the weather and a small field that suits their style and not ours, it took us a while to get going. But once we did, we were able to control the game and pass well. We just couldn’t finish.
“But, it was good enough for the win.”
The Spartans’ Eduardo Alvarez Mendez got the game’s first goal in the 12th minute. It would be 20 minutes before Willmar tied it up with an Abdullahi Mohamud goal off an assist by Anthony Reyes Jimenez.
Tied at halftime, Mohamud put the Cardinals up for good in the 54th minute. Jemil Osman was credited with an assist.
In net, goalkeeper Andrew Ziebarth was credited with eight saves.
On Tuesday, Willmar travels to Alexandria in a matchup to determine first place in the CLC. Willmar comes into the game at 6-0 while Alexandria is 5-0-1 after a 0-0 tie with Sartell on Monday.
