Boys soccer: Cards roll into semis

WILLMAR -- David Gomez scored four goals and the Willmar Cardinals won their Section 6A quarterfinal game against Southwest Christian 6-1 on Thursday at the Kennedy pitch.

WILLMAR - David Gomez scored four goals and the Willmar Cardinals won their Section 6A quarterfinal game against Southwest Christian 6-1 on Thursday at the Kennedy pitch.
Two Gomez goals and a Jesus Nevarez goal gave Willmar a 3-1 lead at the half, after SW Christian had gone up 1-0 on Taylor Ainslie’s score at 15 minutes.
Gomez picked up the hat trick at 62 minutes and scored his fourth at 79 minutes.
Diego Millan also scored for the Cards at 77 minutes.
Gomez, Fernando Zavala, Gerson Maldonado-Garcia, David Aguilar and Ricardo Contreras all picked up assists for Willmar.
Willmar’s Manny Obregon made six saves in the net.
The No. 3-seed Cardinals, winners of four straight games and 10 of their last 12, will play in the semifinals 4 p.m. Wednesday at No. 2-seed Holy Family Catholic.
