ALEXANDRIA -- Willmar slipped into a 1-0 hole in the first thirty seconds and went on to lose to Central Lakes Conference rival Alexandria 3-1 in boys soccer on Tuesday.
Liam Johnston tied it 1-1 in the fifth minute with an assist to Abdiqadir Yusuf, but it was 2-1 by halftime and Alexandria (9-2, 9-5-1) added an insurance goal six minutes into the second half on Joe Wymore's second marker of the match.
"We made some bad mistakes defensively, but give Alexandria credit," said Willmar coach Richard Courtney. "They're strong offensively and the best defensive team we've seen."
Willmar (7-4-1, 10-5-1) closes out the regular season Thursday at Sauk Rapids. Section 2A pairings will be announced today.
