Boys soccer: Willmar blanks Big Lake

WILLMAR - Manuel Obregon posted his fifth shutout of the season and Italy foreign exchange student Tommasco Baioco netted two goals in his first-every varsity appearance as Willmar blanked Big Lake in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals, who improved to 8-3-1 overall, got a late first-half goal from Jesus Nevarez to lead 1-0 at halftime. Baioco then scored four minutes into the second half to ignite an explosion for Willmar.
“We were able to bring up some players from JV-1 who have not had varsity experience and it paid off big time,” said Willmar coach Jeff Winter. “We were able to give some players more time off the bench and rest some players who were banged up in a hard-fought battle with (St. Cloud) Tech on Thursday.”
Mohamed Aden in the 59th minute, Baioco in the 63rd minute and David Gomez in the 76th minute capped the scoring. The Cardinals outshot Big Lake 15-5 en route to winning for the fifth time in their last six matches.
Willmar is at winless Fergus Falls on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a Central Lakes Conference match.
