MINNEAPOLIS -- A valiant comeback effort came up short, as the Central Minnesota Christian boys basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 41-38 loss to Goodhue in the semifinals of the Class A state finals Friday afternoon.
CMCS looked dead in the water with 2:33 to play, as a Calvin Peterson layup gave Goodhue a 39-31 lead. But the 'Jays responded, putting together a 7-0 run, highlighted by five points from Jaxon Schwitters.
Following two Wildcat free throws, CMCS had a chance to tie the game, but a three-point attempt by Matthew Van Eps fell short with 2.8 seconds to play. After Goodhue missed two free throws, Van Eps again attempted to tie the game, but his half-court heave fell well short at the buzzer.
The Bluejays trailed by as many as 12 in the first half and at one point surrendered 15-consecutrive points. Their season comes to a close tomorrow, when they face Red Lake in the third-place game at 9:30 a.m. at Concordia University.
A full recap of this game will be available in the Saturday edition of the West Central Tribune.
