WILLMAR - A sweep in singles and a pair of straight-set wins in doubles propelled Willmar past Sartell 6-1 Tuesday in a Central Lakes Conference match.
The Cardinals nearly posted a shutout, but Sartell was on the winning end of a couple of close sets at 3-doubles. Wins in the six other matches allowed Willmar to improve to 7-1 in the CLC and 10-2 overall. The last time Willmar won at least 10 matches in a season was in 2009.
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season this week with road matches at Fergus Falls on Thursday and at St. Cloud Apollo/Sauk Rapids on Friday.
“We have the strength of having different players each match stepping up and coming through at critical times to help the team cross the finish line,” said Willmar coach Jim Anderson. “The guys continue to believe they can win.”
In singles action, Isaac Yoakum at No. 1 and Drew Corneil at No. 2 won in straight sets with Jarod Swoboda at No. 3 and Manny Obregon at No. 4 winning three-set marathons. Obregon was blanked in his first set before winning 6-1, 6-1.

“Manny adjusted from a slow start, changing gears and outplayed a steady No. 4 player,” said Anderson.
