BRAINERD - The Willmar boys tennis team swept singles and Alex Reynolds and Alec Bateman secured won the clinching match at 1-doubles as the Cardinals defeated Brainerd 5-2 in a Central Lakes Conference match on Monday.
The Cardinals improved to 10-2 and they are tied for second in the CLC. Willmar plays at Sartell today.
Tate Hovland lost his first set at 1-singles against Brainerd’s Tanner Lundberg, and Hovland needed to go extra points to win the second set by tiebreaker. He then won the third set 6-4.
“He (Lundberg) is a top player,” said Willmar head coach Jim Anderson. “Tate just played outstanding.”
Drew Corneil and Jarod Swoboda won in straight sets at 2-singles and 3-singles, and Manny Obregon dropped the first set but then lost two games the final two sets at 4-singles.

Reynolds and Bateman won a 10-8 tiebreaker in the first set and closed the match 7-5 in the second.
“This was a tough win,” Anderson said. “These guys (Brainerd) are really good.”

Benson’s Tyler Bergman defeated Eli Weber in the 2-singles match 6-2, 6-2 and Erik Hoium defeated Ryan Borstad 6-1, 6-3 in 3-singles.
