ST. PETER - A pair of doubles teams from Willmar advanced to the Section 2AA Final Four by winning a combined five matches at the 2AA-South tournament Friday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
The No. 2-seeded combination of sophomores Drew Corneil and Tate Hovland and the fifth-seeded duo of seniors Isaac Yoakum and Nick Courtney went undefeated for the Cardinals to reach the finals that are back at Gustavus on Tuesday starting at 9 a.m. Their opponents will be determined later as the North tournament is Saturday.
Corneil/Hovland had a first-round bye before posting a 6-4, 6-1 win and a 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 victory. Courtney and Yoakum blanked their first-round opponent and followed up with 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 wins.
In singles action for Willmar, No. 5-seed Jarod Swoboda went 1-1 (6-4, 6-2 and 2-6, 3-6) and No. 10 Tom Kerstetter 0-1 (4-6, 2-6) to get eliminated from the tournament.
