Leon H. Brockmeyer, nicknamed "Brock", was a Benson football coach for 30 years, including 22 seasons as head coach from 1935-56. He first coached the Benson Plowboys and later the Benson Braves, compiling a 102-49-8 record. He coached seven West Central Conference championship teams during his career. In 1945, his team was undefeated and unscored upon.

Brockmeyer taught social studies and world history at Benson for 43 years before retiring in 1971. He was well known for his unusual attire, often wearing white bucks and saddle shoes.

Brockmeyer was inducted into the Mankato State University (now Minnesota State-Mankato) Hall of Fame in 1963 and was inducted into the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1968.

The Benson football field was named in his honor in 1965. Brock Appreciation Day in 1983 was designed to establish the Brockmeyer Scholarship Fund. A total of $7,000 was raised during the ceremony and currently, two Benson graduates each year receive $350 scholarships in his name.
