LITTLE FALLS - The Willmar girls cross country team earned its fifth-straight trip to the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet and its ninth overall with an easy victory at the Section 8AA Meet on Thursday.

The New London-Spicer boys team placed second in the Section 6A meet on Thursday at the Little Crow Country Club to also earn a spot in the state meet and Central Minnesota Christian School's Matthew Van Eps won the boys individual championship and the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls and boys team both placed second and earned state meet spots at the Section 3A meet Thursday in Luverne.

In 8AA, the Cardinals had the meet's top three finishers and all seven runners placed in the top 14. It was their fourth-straight section championship.

Willmar's winning 21 points were 80 better than second-place Brainerd. Monticello was third with 125 points.

The Willmar boys team placed fourth in the 16-team 8AA meet with 129 points. Bemidji and Sartell shared the boys championship with 81 points.

The top two teams and the top eight individuals not running for one of those two teams earn spots in the state meet on Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

"It was a great tune-up for state and capped an undefeated regular season," said Willmar head coach Jerry Popp. "That's the first time that has happened in Willmar girls cross country history. Every girl was focused and ready to go"

Sophie Schmitz won the 8AA individual championship, finishing in 18 minutes, 27.76 seconds. Jessa Hanson was second in 18:35.46 and Kayla Rudie was third in 18:46.44.

Heidi Schmitz (18:56.71) was sixth, missing a top-five finish by just one second. Leah Hansen (19:02.42) was ninth, Serena Monson (19:13.83) was 11th and Savannah Anez (19:21.94) placed 14th.

The Willmar girls placed third in the 2015 state meet behind Edina and Marshall. The Cards also were third in 2014 behind Wayzata and Edina, and they were fifth in 2013.

In the boys race, Willmar's Mason Wendt placed 10th in 16:35.46 to earn a spot in the state meet. Hudeife Mire was the Cardinals' next finisher in 20th in 16:56.17.

"Our boys finished about where we expected to," Popp said. "We were the youngest team in the section so a top-four spot-only one point out of third place -was a huge step for these guys. We have set the table for what could be a great boys season next fall. Mason Wendt had a fantastic race running a lifetime (personal record) to qualify individually."

In the boys' 6A meet, New London-Spicer's Tristan Thompson was 12th in 21:35.00 and Max Maher was 16th in 21:44.70.

Benson/KMS' Josh Bailey also earned a state meet berth finishing sixth in 21:13.30.

In the 3A meet, Van Eps won in 16:19.40 and LQPV/DB's Keiser Freetly was third in 16:27.00.

Montevideo's Kurt TeBeest placed sixth and teammate Joshua Tastad placed 13th, both earning spots in the state meet.
