Card girls soccer holds off Tech

WILLMAR -- Willmar's Sam Christoffer scored the game's only goal in the sixth minute and, despite the slim margin, the Cardinals were never nervous in a 1-0 win over St. Cloud Tech on Thursday at the Kennedy School field.

Christoffer scored on an assist from Julissa Celis-Victoria, and goalie Bryton Carlson turned back all 10 Tech shots on goal.

"There was never really a moment I felt like we would concede," said Willmar head coach David Vinje on a big win for his team. "We were in the driver's seat. We needed this."

St. Cloud Tech scored quickly in each half, especially the first, and Willmar was unable to mount a rally to tie late in the game on Thursday at St. Cloud State University.

Ethan Miller scored in the first minutes of both halves, and Abdirizak Ahmed and Aydurus Hassan also scored Tech goals.

Willmar's Carlos Robles broke the shutout in the 69th minute on an assist from Kelvin Gomez-Padilla, and Robles assisted on Maslah Sarah's goal in the 74th minute.

The Cardinals wrap up the regular season against Mound Westonka at 3 p.m. Saturday, the the Section 6A seeds will be decided at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Mound Westonka match could impact seeding. M-W is ranked No. 10 in Class A and Willmar is ranked No. 23.

Willmar's number two, three and four singles players were able to extend matches into the third set, but top-seeded Foley swept fourth-seeded Willmar in the Section 8AA quarterfinals.

The Cardinal girls now set their sights on the section individual tournament, which will take place Friday and Saturday. In singles, Lydia Morrell is the number four seed and will face Sartell's Sadie Baumann in the opening round. Freshman Allison Bruhn has Willmar's other singles spot and will take on Little Falls' Bri Marshik. In doubles, Alyssa Morrell and Mady Spencer will challenge Sartell's Grace McCabe and Maggie Kulus, and Chloe Hansen and Ashley Prahl and face off with Little Falls' Alexa Stoner and McKayla Geise.

Paynesville's Preston Carlson was the top area boys finisher with a fifth-place in the boys race.

Weekend Results

Cross Country

The Willmar girls cross country team bested defending Class AA state champion Wayzata to win the Willmar Invitational on Saturday at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.

The Cardinals girls finished with 55 points, 10 better than second-place Wayzata.

The Trojans were the top team at the 2017 state meet and have won four state titles since 2012. Willmar was fourth in Class AA last year.

Sartell's Ingrid Buiceag-Arama won the first race but Willmar placed three runners-Serena Monson (4th), Leah Hansen (5th) and Amel Dayib (7th)-in the top seven.

The Willmar boys team place fifth behind race winner Hopkins, Moorhead, Bismarck Century and Sartell.

Mason Wendt was the Cardinals' top runner, placing 14th. Hudeife Mire placed 22nd.

Ava Brogren won the 200 individual medley and placed second by just 0.07 seconds in the 100 breaststroke, and Willmar's 200 freestyle relay team placed first at the Bemidji Invitational on Saturday in Bemidji.

The Cardinals' Edyn Saulsbury had a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle and Amanda Mathiasen placed second in the 50 freestyle. .

The Willmar volleyball team won three of five matches to place sixth in the 32-team St. Michael-Albertville Invitation over the weekend in St. Michael.

Willmar defeated St. Paul Academy and Elk River on Friday. On Saturday, the Cardinals defeated Buffalo and lost matches to Champlin Park at St. Michael-Albertville.

Willmar's Abby Stark was named to the all-tournament team. Stark finished the tournament with five ace serves, seven set assists, four kills and 60 digs.
