WILLMAR - Willmar's postseason run was cut short Tuesday afternoon in a 4-1 loss to Providence Academy in the Section 6A opener at the Kennedy School field.

The Lions entered the game as the tournament's No. 11 seed and bookended the day with penalty kicks for the upset of the sixth-seeded Cardinals on a rainy day.

Connor McIntee converted a penalty in the seventh minute for the Lions but Willmar's Kelvin Gomez Padilla pulled one back on some commotion in the box just seven minutes later to knot the game at one.

Providence Academy took a first half lead, though, on a misplayed ball that redirected into Willmar's net seven minutes before halftime.

The second half proved to be more of the same for the Cardinals, as Dylan Servais pushed the game to 3-1 in the 46th minute. McIntee ended the game with another converted penalty in the 74th minute to doom the home team.

Providence Academy ended Willmar's season with four first half goals and two more in the second half of a shutout in the Section 6A opener Tuesday night in Plymouth.

Willmar goalkeeper Bryton Carlson made eight saves in the opening half and Ella Swenson made five saves in the second half for the Cardinals.
