WILLMAR - Willmar boys soccer coach Jeff Winter told his team to watch out for Alexandria. Despite their sub-.500 record, they could play spoiler at the top of the Central Lakes Conference standings in the final week of the season. And, the Sept. 4 matchup between the two teams saw Alexandria take a quick 2-0 lead.

The Willmar boys seemed to heed that advice with five first-half goals in a 6-1 victory Tuesday at Hodapp Field.

"We need every point we can get," Winter said. "I reminded them of how that first game went and they definitely came ready to play. They moved the ball well, had nice passes and finished nicely as well. It's good to go up early and play with a lead."

In the first 10 minutes, Willmar built a 3-0 lead with goals from Hamza Muhumed, Cesar Leiva and Carlos Robles. Robles and Leiva both scored another goal before the halftime whistle, and Robles added a second-half point to complete the hat trick.

Leiva finished the match with two goals and two assists, and Kelvin Gomez Padilla added two assists in the victory. In net, goalkeeper Zach Courtney stopped five shots.

Section 8A seeding takes place Sunday, but Willmar (9-4-1, 7-3-1 CLC) has two more games before getting to postseason play. First, a matchup against CLC foe St. Cloud Tech Thursday in St. Cloud, followed by a home match with Mound-Westonka.

"The next couple games will show us what we got," Winter said. "Hopefully it'll be positive heading into the postseason."
