WILLMAR - An exciting finish at the Willmar High School on Thursday resulted in a 93.5-91.5 win over Rocori for the Willmar boys swimming and diving team.
The Cardinals needed just a second-place finish in the 400 Freestyle relay to seal the win. The quartet of Garrett Shuldes, Darren Orsten, Nash VanKlompenburg and Mateo Marin-Mera accomplished the feat to give Willmar its first win of the season.
The Cardinals started strong, finishing 1-2 in the 200 Medley relay. They also had River Rowan win the diving competition, VanKlompenburg take first in the 100 Backstroke and Ryan Kuchta capture the 100 Breaststroke.
Also coming up big for the Cardinals was Jon Avery. The eighth-grader piled up three points with a fourth-place showing in the 200 Freestyle and a fifth-place finish in the 100 Freestyle.
The Cardinals take on Sartell on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in their home opener.
