WILLMAR - The Ridgewater volleyball team and Ellsworth played five grueling sets, with Ellsworth edging the Warriors 3-2 in the final match of the Ridgewater Classic on Saturday at the Warriors’ gym.
Ellsworth, a NJCAA Division II program, won 25-21, 27-29, 25-14, 21-25 and 30-28 to improve to 3-1.
The D-III Warriors, who started the season with two victories on Friday, take their 2-1 record into their MCAC opener against Rochester on Saturday.
“This match was a challenge from every perspective and a loss in the fifth set is always tough to swallow,” said Ridgewater head coach Joe Sussenguth. “Perhaps even more-so considering all the points that were scored. Both teams battled very hard and Ellsworth just made a couple of more plays than we did.”
Brenna Olsen led the Warriors with 17 kills and just four errors in 49 attacks. She also had 18 digs and a block.

Jen Puncochar had 15 kills but 10 hitting errors. She also had 11 digs. Hailey Osland had 11 kills, and Kaitlyn Sterner finished with 46 set assists, 8 digs and a block.
“There is something to learn in every challenge,” Sussenguth said, “and we now have a foundation to build on as we head into our conference opener.”
