Baseball: Ridgewater earns a sweep against Riverland

Warriors beat Blue Devils 5-3 and 8-6 to complete a successful weekend

AUSTIN — The Ridgewater baseball team wrapped up a strong weekend with a sweep of Riverland Community College on Sunday.

The Warriors beat the Blue Devils 5-3 and 8-6.

The victories came after a split with Anoka-Ramsey, including a 13-2 five-inning win and a 5-0 loss.

Ridgewater now has a 7-7 in the Minnesota College Athletic Conference and 9-15 overall.

In Game 1, Ridgewater took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, getting a two-run double from Nolan Spence. Tyler Traphagen followed up with an RBI double in the second for the Warriors. Jaxon Nickels brought home Ridgewater’s final run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3.


In Game 2, Tyler Flis homered in the top of the first for the Warriors. Brad Bickmann followed with a two-run homer in the third off the Blue Devils. Jadrien Keavy then added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning as Ridgewater tied it up with Riverland, 4-4.

The Warriors then got doubles from Bickmann, Flis and Seth Resnick in a four-run fifth inning. Ayden Gustafson wound up getting the pitching win and Jack Howard got the save, pitching Ridgewater out of a jam in the sixth.

Gustafson and Howard are both freshmen from Renville County West.

Late Friday, Ridgewater split a doubleheader with Anoka-Ramsey at the Twin Lake Diamonds in Spicer.

In the first game, Ridgewater’s Reece Schwirtz went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. In the second game, Anoka-Ramsey’s Brayden Buttweiler tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking no one.

Ridgewater is host to a doubleheader with Riverland beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar.
