WILLMAR -- Many Minnesota colleges will be waiving application fees next week to encourage high school students to apply early in their senior year.

Willmar Senior High is a host site for the statewide initiative Minnesota College Application Week that runs Monday through Friday.

The effort targets low-income students and those who would be the first generation in their families to attend college. However, all students will be urged to apply next week to take advantage of the fee waiver.

While all high schools can be involved in the effort, host sites promote the effort more and record data on application activity at their schools, said Leah Rosendahl, a counselor at Willmar Senior High.

The Willmar counselors have asked staff members to wear their college team gear during the week and to set aside a little time to talk to their students about their college experiences, she said.

"We'll try to create a college-going atmosphere," Rosendahl said.

"We're hoping no application fee will help get some of these kids on board," she added.

Ridgewater College is participating in the week and will be waiving its $20 application fee, according to a release from the college. The fee will be waived to all applicants applying to enter the school as an incoming freshman for the next year.

High school students seeking more information about the no-fee application process should speak with their high school counselors.

For more information on Ridgewater's participation, call Sally Kerfeld, director of Admissions, at 320-222-5977.
