Cross Country: MCA pairs punch state ticket

NEW LONDON -- Two Morris/Chokio-Alberta boys and girls runners qualified for the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet during the Section 6A Championships on Thursday at the Little Crow Country Club.

NEW LONDON - Two Morris/Chokio-Alberta boys and girls runners qualified for the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet during the Section 6A Championships on Thursday at the Little Crow Country Club.

The Class A state meet is Nov. 3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

MCA's Solomon Johnson placed eighth and teammate Noah Stewart placed ninth to earn state spots.

The Tigers' Maddie Carrington was the area's top scorer with a fifth-place finish. Teammate Meredith Carrington placed 11th.

The West Central boys team claimed the section championship, with Staples-Motley placing second and Morris/CA finishing third.

The Staples-Motley girls teams on the section crown, with West Central placing second. Morris/CA was the top area team, placing fifth.

Section 3A

Championships

LUVERNE - St. Olaf College has been like a second home to the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd cross country teams.

Taking first place at the Section 3A championship on Thursday, the LQPV/DB boys are headed to state for the fourth straight year after a team score of 31 points. The girls, placing second with 99, behind section champion Luverne's 51, will go to state for the sixth straight fall.

Mike Kvaal and Zeke Sather placed 1-2 to lead the charge for LQPV/DB. Yellow Medicine East's Rory Shackelford also qualified for state as an individual, finishing in a tie for sixth.

Isabel Schirm was the top runner for the LQPV/DB girls, finishing in fifth, followed by Grace Heglund in sixth.

The Class A state cross country championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
