BENSON - Montevideo’s Kurt TeBeest and Morris/Chokio-Alberta’s Maddie Carrington dominated their competitors to win West Central Conference championships on Tuesday at the Benson Golf Club.

The Benson/KMS boys team placed first with 48 points, 12 better than second-place Montevideo.

Morris/CA placed five girls in the top 10 and won with 25 points. Melrose was second with 61.

TeBeest finished in 16:55.00, almost 47 seconds ahead of Benson/KMS’ Josh Bailey. TeBeest’s teammate, Josh Tastad placed third and BKMS’ Jonathan Tostenson was fourth.

TeBeest said his plan entering the race was simple: “Just win it. I definitely wanted to see what I had for (sections) next week.”

TeBeest won a section championship last season and placed 12th at the Class A state meet, but he expects good competition this year from Pipestone’s Michael Suda, who ran 56th at state last year.

“I expect he will be pushing strong, so I will be mindful of that,” TeBeest said.

The sunny, warm conditions were a concern, he said.

“I’m a cold-weather runner so I was caught off guard by this (weather),” TeBeest said. “But there was a nice breeze. It was comfortable.”

Carrington finished in 19:41.07, crossing ahead of Montevideo’s Claire Sulflow, who ran 20:51.05. MCA’s Savannah Aanerud placed third and fellow Tiger Malory Anderson was fourth in 21:12.05.

Carrington, too, was concerned conditions might be too warm.

“I was just running really well,” Carrington said. “I was worried it might be too hot but it was OK.”

Like TeBeest, Carrington’s strategy was go strong from the start.

“Run hard,” she said. “I try to not think about it too much. Just run.”
