Cross Country Roundup: LQPV/DB, Willmar girls win

NEW LONDON -- Even with two top runners held out of the meet, the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls took first at New London-Spicer Invite on Thursday on the rolling, thick green grass of the Little Crow Country Club.

NEW LONDON - Even with two top runners held out of the meet, the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls took first at New London-Spicer Invite on Thursday on the rolling, thick green grass of the Little Crow Country Club.

The 20-plus teams, not all complete, drew a huge following, forcing spectators to park along Highway 23 and across the four-lane from the parking lot. The race was a must for many teams who will be back here Oct. 23 for the Section 6A meet.

LQPV/DB coach John Schurb said he had two slightly injured runners in his top five he was saving for a home invite on Tuesday.

Led by runner-up Alaysia Freetly, now a senior, the Eagles scored 67 points, easily trumping Albany with 106.

Andrew Zachman of Holdingford won the boys race in a time of 16:20. Royalton’s Zach Carlson took second in a 5k time of 16:17 with Ben Burgett of Community Christian third in 16:21. Zachman placed fifth at the state meet last fall.

Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball senior Emily Donnay, the pre-meet favorite, turned in a splendid 4k time of 14:52 for the girls victory. Freetly finished in 15:04 followed by Emily’s sophomore sister, Anna, in 15:06. Also running at the front from the start was St. Cloud Cathedral’s Rachel Eickhoff, who placed fourth.

Jordyn Sterud of LQPV/DB was sixth and Ali McGraw of Litchfield took seventh.
