MINNETRISTA -- Willmar senior Samantha Hanson placed second among 143 runners and four younger Cardinals also placed in the top 12 to help Willmar win the girls team title Thursday at the Bauman/Rovn Invitational at Gale Woods Farm.

MINNETRISTA - Willmar senior Samantha Hanson placed second among 143 runners and four younger Cardinals also placed in the top 12 to help Willmar win the girls team title Thursday at the Bauman/Rovn Invitational at Gale Woods Farm.

Hanson’s time of 15:14.8 was nearly 10 seconds off the winning pace set by Chanhassen’s Anastasia Korzenowski, but the Central Lakes Conference Performer of the Week - for winning the Moorhead Invite last week - led a strong showing for the No. 2-ranked team in Class AA.

Sophomores Jessa Hanson (sixth), Sophie Schmitz (eighth) and Kayla Rudie (12th), and eighth-grader Serena Monson (seventh) had sub-16:00 times, allowing Willmar to accumulate just 35 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Eden Prairie (50) and third-place Minnetonka (89).

On the boys side, Willmar placed 12th among 15 complete teams after having senior Ian Thompson finish 17th and junior Nadir Yusaf 20th.

Willmar next competes in Hutchinson next Thursday.
