MOORHEAD -- The Willmar boys and girls cross country teams started the 2010 season with third-place finishes at the Moorhead Rotary Invitational Monday.
The Cardinal boys finished with 89 points, led by Anders Byberg's second-place showing in 17:10.89. Moorhead, which won the boys title with 47 points, had Lukas Gemar win the individual race in 16:28.89. Mowlid Mohamud took sixth in 17:34.0 for the Cardinals
Tara Rudie took eighth in a time of 16:57.0 as the Willmar girls recorded 103 points. Moorhead won the team title with 72. Haylie Zenner of Fergus Falls won the individual race in a time of 15:47.08.
"It was a strong opening for the Cardinals. The boys ran close to No. 5-ranked Moorhead, who returns all seven of their top runners from last year's fifth-place state team and Perham, one of the favorites for Class A honors," wrote Willmar coach Jerry Popp in an email. "Anders Byberg recorded a personal record in very hot, humid, windy conditions. ... The young girls team finished a strong third behind No. 9-ranked Moorhead and highly-ranked Class A Perham."
