EDINA — When the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd dance team left the floor Friday, head coach Lisa Johnson thought the Shadows nailed it.

Their routine was perfect, she told them, their best of the season, even better than their section championship dance.

“They really had their best performance of the year,” Johnson said. “I told them I was proud of them no matter what happens.”

And then it happened.

The judges decided that LQPV/D-B would be state Class A Jazz Division champion for the third straight year.

The Shadows scored three ranking points, meaning the three judges’ scores used all had them as the top team of 12 competing Friday.

Yellow Medicine East took second. The Silhouettes had six rank points. YME is coached by Julie Jaenisch, Johnson’s sister.

“They really turned it on today,” Johnson said of the Silhouettes. “They gave us a little bit of a scare.”

Minnewaska, from the same Section 2A as LQPV/D-B and YME, finished 10th.

That means that 2A produced three of the top 10 teams in the state, taking first, second and 10th.

It also gives the west central area its 18th state dance team title since 1992, the most of any area sport.

“We’ve talked about this for years about our section,” Johnson said. “We give each other so much tough competition every year.”

Class A high kick takes place starting at about 12:50 p.m. Saturday at Edina. Tickets are not available. Steaming of the competition is available for a fee through .

LQPV/D-B, YME, Minnewaska and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City all compete in Class A high kick. The Shadows also are two-time defending state champions in high kick.
