WILLMAR -- The Kandiyohi County chapter of Pheasants Forever are encouraging area residents to consider feeding pheasants.

The winter snow pack and ice make it difficult for the pheasants to reach their natural food sources. The birds can manage cold temperatures, but needs food energy to fuel them.

For those interested in helping out, the chapter offers these guidelines:

Do no place food on the side of road or near snowmobile trails, since it can be dangerous for both birds and bird alike.

Place food in open areas near cover. Ideal is a high spot with southern exposure near a tree grove, brushy cover or cattail marsh.

If scattering corn, start with small amounts until the birds find it.

Avoid feeding where deer may be concentrated. If deer discover the feed, reduce the amounts or move the feed to another site.

Once you start feeding, don't stop until the snow is gone. The birds will become dependant on the food.
