PAYNESVILLE — BOLD traveled to Paynesville for the teams' last season-opener for the foreseeable future and hung on for a 30-20 victory in a hard-nosed, fast-paced game that left everyone in Paynesville—players, coaches and fans alike—gasping for air when the final whistle blew.

BOLD's defense played a bend-but-don't-break philosophy as Paynesville knocked on the door twice in the first half from the one-yard line and came up short both times. Paynesville's defense was equally strong for the majority of the game but the Warriors capitalized on a Gavin Vosika screen that went 33 yards for a touchdown and a 62-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jordan Sagedahl to edge the Bulldogs.

Paynesville bopped BOLD on the nose with a big-time stop defensively in the game's first series and the Bulldogs came within inches of a touchdown but the Warrior defense didn't falter, leaving Paynesville wanting more.

The Bulldogs bounced back with their next possession, though, following a big punt return by Zach Schroeder who brought the ball back to the nine-yard line. Daltin Christinsen pounded his way in from the one-yard line to give Paynesville an 8-0 lead following a successful two-point conversion.

BOLD responded with a strong drive of their own, though, marching down the field and culminating in a Dawson Vosika 3-yard touchdown run.

Paynesville threatened once again in the second quarter but the BOLD defense showed their mettle again, thwarting the Bulldogs at the one-yard line.

BOLD's Luke Ryan picked off the first play of the second half to give the Warriors a bump in momentum and good field position. Moments later, Gavin Vosika took the screen pass 33 yards to the house to break the tie. Ryan also caught the two-point conversion pass in what proved to be a big play.

Paynesville quarterback Max Weidner came out of the gates confident with his arm but it was his work on the ground that kept the Bulldogs in the game. He finished with 19 carries for 101 yards, including second-half touchdown runs of 24 yards and 17 yards. His 24-yard carry gave the Bulldogs a chance to tie but the conversion failed and BOLD never looked back.

Sagedahl delivered a game-breaking run, faking a option toss before keeping it himself for the 62-yard touchdown. He finished the game with seven carries for 75 yards and completed six of his 18 passes for 92 yards.

Gavin Vosika is often BOLD's go-to ball carrier but it was Dawson Vosika and Tim Peppel who broke the Paynesville defense, who looked strong all night. Dawson Vosika ran 11 times for 69 yards and a touchdown and Peppel added 68 yards on 15 carries.

Weidner's 17-yard scamper cut the Warrior lead to 23-20 but Sagedahl dropped a four-yard touchdown pass to Ryan late in the fourth quarter to ice the game.

BOLD's defense proved to be strong all night but one of the biggest successes was limiting Paynesville running back Zach Schroeder, who also battled leg cramps throughout the humid night. He finished the game with 11 carries for 48 yards.
