WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals got the seed they were expecting in the Section 8AAAA playoffs: No. 4

Willmar (2-6) plays host to No. 5 Little Falls (1-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the only first-round game scheduled in 8AAAA, which has five teams.

If the Cardinals win, they would play at 7 p.m. Saturday at No. 1 Detroit Lakes (8-0). The Lakers have a first-round bye.

Willmar head coach Jon Konold said Wednesday night that he expected the Cardinals to play the Flyers. The teams last played in 2009, when both were members of the Central Lakes Conference. Willmar won that meeting, 28-25.

Willmar is coming off a 44-7 loss to second-ranked Hutchinson. Konold gave his team the day off Thursday, then had practices scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Monday in preparation for Little Falls.

The rest of the area seeds also were announced Thursday, with one exception. Section 4 9-Man, where Renville County West (8-0) is expected to get the top seed based on QRF power rankings, would learn its complete bracket Friday. Red Rock Central and Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda played Thursday night.

BOLD (8-0), as expected, got the top seed in Section 5A. The Warriors open play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against No. 8 MACCRAY (1-7).

Paynesville (7-1), the top seed in 5AA, has a first-round bye. The Bulldogs play the winner of Holdingford at Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

All involved seek berths into the state playoffs, which are scheduled to begin Nov. 8. The state semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis are Nov. 14-16 with the Prep Bowl scheduled for Nov. 29-30 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
