SAUK RAPIDS — Sauk Rapids found a way to storm back from a 20-0 deficit. But on the final play of the game, Willmar withstood the Storm and stayed undefeated.

In double overtime, Sauk Rapids quarterback Dominic Mathies scored on a 2-yard run to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 35-34. Looking to go for the win, the Storm put the ball in Mathies’ hands again. But, Willmar stopped Mathies at the line of scrimmage to secure the one-point road victory in North Central White play Thursday night.

“It was definitely one that you’ll tell stories about,” said Cardinals head coach Jon Konold.

“We struggled offensively all night. We played good defense for the first three quarters. But they made a lot of mistakes and we capitalized. We could never sustain anything on offense. Our defense kept us around. They made a lot of plays. They're a solid football team; they just make too many mistakes themselves.”

Willmar opened the score in the first quarter when Jacob Streed connected with Jacob Rosendahl for a 28-yard score. Then with 1 minute, 31 seconds to go before halftime, Streed threw his second score of the game, finding Xavier Wickliff from 18 yards out to put the Cardinals up 13-0 at the break.

Alex Schramm got in on the aerial game as well, hitting Michael Price for an 11-yard score with 4:30 remaining in the third.

Alex Harren put Sauk Rapids on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Late in the fourth, the Storm scored in quick succession as Mathies found Ethan Opsahl from 33 yards out to make it a one-score game. Then, with 11 seconds left in regulation, Mathies found Opsahl in the end zone again from 11 yards out to tie the game at 20-all.

Sauk Rapids opened overtime with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mathies to Jayce Walrath, then converted on the two-point play as Tayton Philavanh crossed the goal line. The Cardinals got tricky on their try as Will Hisken scored from 4 yards out on a reverse. Brandt Sunder kept the game alive on a pass from Schramm for the conversion.

Price tacked on his second touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run, followed by the extra point from LaBlue Moo.

The Cardinals play Rocori at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at Hodapp Field.
