DANUBE — Through three quarters, Mountain Lake and Renville County West were separated by just two points in a showdown between two top-10 teams in 9-Man football.

The fourth quarter is where the top-ranked Wolverines took over.

With touchdown runs by Marcos Deleon-Lopez and Micah Holmberg, Mountain Lake cemented a 26-12 victory over the No. 7-ranked Jaguars on Friday night.

The Wolverines are one of the standard bearers in 9-Man, winning the state championship in 2019. There was no state tournament in 2020.

With good field possession on its second drive of the game, the Wolverines got on the board first when wideout Alexander Blom made an over-the-shoulder catch on a Deleon-Lopez pass for a 22-yard score.

Field position paid dividends for RCW in the second quarter. Defensive lineman Carter Rice sniffed out a screen pass and came up with an interception, giving the Jaguars’ offense the ball at the Wolverines’ 20-yard line. Four plays later, quarterback AJ Gasca snuck the ball past the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left before the break. An incomplete pass on the 2-point attempt kept RCW from taking the lead as Mountain Lake led 7-6 at halftime.

The two teams traded scores in the third quarter. Mountain Lake struck first when Deleon-Lopez hit Kolby Kremmin for a 64-yard touchdown pass. But on the ensuing kickoff, RCW cut the gap to 14-12 as Isaac Haen broke off a 92-yard kick return for a score.

Deleon-Lopez was 10 of 20 passing for 159 yards. He also ran for another 66 yards on nine carries. Kremmin was the Wolverines’ leading rusher (10-67) and receiver (3-88).

Gasca was 9 of 14 passing for 105 yards for RCW. Haen was his top target with 56 yards on three catches. Jack Wertish had a game-high 11 tackles for the Jaguars.

RCW (1-1) travels to Lamberton next Friday to play Red Rock Central.
