MADISON — With key performances by senior Landon Schirm and the entire run defense, the Lac qui Parle Valley football team earned a 19-6 homecoming win over Canby in Southwest West district action Friday.

A week after Lancers running back Ty Stoks went for 315 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a win over MACCRAY, the Eagles limited him to just one score, a 16-yard TD run in the third quarter.

“We did some things very well defensively tonight,” said LQPV head coach Tony Smith. “We rallied to the ball. He’s a tough runner, but we got two or three guys to him to limit the yardage he got.”

Then on offense, Schirm found success with his hands and his legs.

Scoreless after the first quarter, Schirm got the game’s first score when he hauled in a 22-yard TD pass from sophomore Kaden Molden to make it 6-0. That lead would hold at halftime.

Then in the fourth quarter, Schirm crossed the goal line twice. With 9 minutes, 7 seconds to play, he grabbed his second receiving touchdown of the game after hauling in a 12-yard pass from Molden.

With 3:03 remaining, Schirm cemented the victory with a 37-yard scamper to make it a two-score game.

Schirm had five catches for 43 yards and also ran three times for 81 yards.

“He had a nice performance,” Smith said of Schirm’s night. “The O-line did a nice job protecting our guys and he was able to get some big runs there. Our other running back Dain (Mortenson) was hobbled by a little bit of a leg injury, but they had kind of a nice inside-outside game going.”

Mortenson ran the ball 21 times for a LQPV-best 88 yards. Molden was 9 of 18 passing for 62 yards while also running for 23 yards.

Bringing their record to an even 3-3, the Eagles are back at home Thursday to face Lakeview. The Lakers are 5-1 after beating Yellow Medicine East on Friday, 54-12.
