Girls Basketball: Cardinals notch road win in opener

BIG LAKE - Lexi Orlowski was 9 of 12 from the field and 6 of 8 from the free throw line to score a game-high 24 points and spark Willmar to a 63-54 win over Big Lake in the Cardinals’ season-opener on Thursday.

Willmar also got 13 points from Grace Sawyer and another 12 from Courtney Hanson. Those were the only three players to score in double figures for Willmar as the Cardinals shot just 31 percent from the field.

The Cardinals owned a 14-point lead at one point and went to the free throw line 44 times after Big Lake committed 31 fouls. Sawyer was 7-for-8 at the line.

“When we slowed the game down we took advantage of our size to score,” said Willmar coach Dustin Carlson. “We didn’t play the best defense, but we got it done. They are a scrappy team and it’s good to get a win on the road the first time out.”

Cayle Hovland had 13 and Heidi Sellmann six of Willmar’s 31 rebounds.

The Cardinals have a week off until hosting Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud Tech on Thursday.

“We’ll get a few practices to work out, which is nice,” said Carlson. “We’ll hit it hard next week because we have a couple of big games (St. Cloud Tech and Hutchinson).”
