Girls Basketball Roundup: BBE survives an overtime scare
Top-seeded Jaguars trip Pine River-Backus Tigers 56-46 to win the Section 5A-North final. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa plays for a state berth Thursday against Swanville at Minnewaska High School.
BELGRADE — One of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s toughest games this season was against Pine River-Backus.
Make that two of the Jaguars’ toughest.
Top-seeded BBE needed overtime to overcome PR-B 56-46 in the Section 5A-West championship Tuesday night at BBE High School.
BBE (20-1) beat PR-B 67-56 on Feb. 26 in Belgrade. Only a 42-38 loss at top-ranked Minneota and a 62-53 victory over Holdingford were closer games this season for the Jaguars.
Third-seeded PR-B led 24-23 at halftime. The teams were tied 44-44 at the end of regulation. BBE then out-scored the Tigers 12-2 in overtime to advance.
Abby Berge led the Jaguars with 21 points, including a 9-for-12 effort from the free-throw line. She also had six rebounds and five steals.
Allisa Knight added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Josie Knutson contributed 11 points for the Jaguars. Liz French had 10 rebounds.
Hurting BBE was a 1-for-15 performance from 3-point range, 6%.
BBE plays for the section championship at 7 p.m. Thursday at Minnewaska High School in Glenwood. The Jaguars face Swanville, a 59-50 winner over Hinckley-Finlayson. Swanville is the third seed in the East, having beaten No. 2 Braham 59-46 in the 5A-East semifinals. Hinckley-Finlayson knocked off No. 1 Ogilvie 60-52 in the other East semifinal before falling to Swanville.
BBE seeks its second straight state berth and also the second in school history after reaching the consolation semifinals last year before the pandemic forced the cancelation of the consolation championship game.

Unbeaten Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s ran past BOLD to win the Section 2A-North title in Sleepy Eye.
The third-seeded Warriors led 36-33 before the Knights went on a 13-0 run to end the first half.
“Honestly, it was a great basketball game,” BOLD head coach Mike Kingery said. “We were up, then all of a sudden, we got tired the last two minutes and laid an egg.
“The momentum changed, everything changed after that. That’s what you get against a good team like that.”
Madison Mathiowetz had 40 points and Sydney Winschitl added 31 for St. Mary’s (21-0).
“Windschitl kind of got them going and Mathiowetz took over in the second half,” Kingery said. “She (Mathiowetz) is the best player we’ve seen and it’s not even close.”
Mari Ryberg had 14 points, Lainey Braulick added 12 and Abby Meyers chipped in with 10 for BOLD.
St. Mary’s plays for the Section 2A championship at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sibley East High School in Arlington.
The Knights play Waterville-Elysian-Morristown. W-E-M, the top seed in the South, beat No. 2 Martin County West, 61-26.
