Girls Basketball Roundup: BOLD to play for Section 3AA-North title after stunning top-seeded TMB

GRANITE FALLS - Baylie Kubesh led BOLD with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals and surpassed 1,000 career points as the Warriors took out top-seed Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 60-56 on Tuesday in the Section 3AA-North semifinals at Yellow Medicine East High School.

The No. 4-seed Warriors play No. 3 Redwood Valley for the subsection title at 7 p.m. Friday in Montevideo.

BOLD improved to 16-10 while TMB closes out its season at 19-7.

“This was a big one for us,” said BOLD head coach Brian Kingery. “The girls played well.”

Kubesh hit a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left in the first half to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

The Warriors led virtually the entire game and held of TMB by hitting 12 of 16 free throws in the second half.

Carly Sigurdson, the Warriors’ 2,000-career-point scorer, led the team with 24 points, and Mallarie Steffel finished with 8 rebounds and Andrea Maher pulled down 7 boards.

The South half of the section has Fairmont and Martin County West playing in the sub-section final. The two winners will face off next Thurday at 5 p.m. in Marshall in the section final.

Dawson-Boyd’s run in the Section 3A tournament ended in the subsection semifinals against the Lancers, who also handed the Blackjacks a home loss on Jan. 7.

Dawson-Boyd finishes 19-5 overall.

Justine Lee scored 19 to lead the Blackjacks.

Katarina Kuhlmann followed with 15 points and Kelly Husby 12.

Morgan Merritt had a game-high 26 points for Canby with 6 assists, and Ricki Kallhoff added 20 points and 7 boards.

Canby will face No. 2-ranked Minneota for the sub-section title Friday at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall.
