BRAINERD - Wasted opportunities at the free throw line and poor starts to both halves doomed Willmar Friday as the Cardinals were upended 59-49 by Brainerd in a Central Lakes Conference game.
Willmar went to the charity stripe nine more times than Brainerd, but three Cardinals were a combined 16-for-29 (55 percent). The Cardinals were also cold from the field, shooting at a 31-percent clip after going 16-for-51.
“The girls really gave the effort tonight. It was too bad we started both halves so poorly,” said Willmar coach Dustin Carlson. “If we could just throw out the first three or four minutes of each half we (would have been) solid.”
Courtney Magnuson’s double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds paced Willmar. Kaitlynn Kienholz added 16 points and six rebounds, and Cayle Hovland 10 rebounds.
After going 1-2 this past week, Willmar (8-5, 8-13) will look to rebound Tuesday when it plays at Section 2AAA rival Worthington at 6:30 p.m.
