Girls basketball roundup: Cardinals clip Worthington

WORTHINGTON -- Effective shooting from the field and a late three-point play from Courtney Magnuson propelled Willmar past Section 2AAA rival Worthington 63-60 Tuesday.

WORTHINGTON - Effective shooting from the field and a late three-point play from Courtney Magnuson propelled Willmar past Section 2AAA rival Worthington 63-60 Tuesday.
The Cardinals were 23-for-39 (59 percent) overall from the floor and got three 3-pointers from Sarah Smith. Magnuson paced the squad with 16 points and Kaitlynn Kienholz (14) and Lexi Orlowski (10) also scored in double figures.
“What a game. (It was a) fun up-tempo high school game,” said Willmar coach Dustin Carlson. “(It’s) nice to see we can win a tough, close battle. (It was a) exciting game and a big section win for us.”
The Willmar coaching staff drew up a play for Orlowski to get the ball down low, but Worthington (14-7) denied the junior center to score. Magnuson then got the ball on a back screen and scored on a layup. The senior guard was fouled on the play and made the free throw to break a 60-60 tie.
Kienholz grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and Courtney Hanson added eight points, five rebounds and five assists. Cayle Hovland also dished out five assists as the Cardinals overcame committing 29 turnovers.
Willmar (9-13) is at Sartell Thursday for a Central Lakes Conference game.
