Girls basketball roundup: Cardinals drop opener

WILLMAR -- Willmar came out on the wrong end of a quiet offensive game, falling 38-33 to Glencoe-Silver Lake in its season opener on Thursday in a non-conference game.

WILLMAR - Willmar came out on the wrong end of a quiet offensive game, falling 38-33 to Glencoe-Silver Lake in its season opener on Thursday in a non-conference game.
The Cardinals (0-1) next play Thursday at Mankato West.

Sauk Centre got its second straight victory in as many nights as it defeated Minnewaska 55-38. Maesyn Thiesen was the leading scorer for the Mainstreeters with 17 points.
The Lakers fell behind by 17 in the first half and never recovered.
Sauk Centre will play New-London Spicer next Tuesday and Minnewaska plays an away non-conference game against St. John’s Prep on Dec. 9.

A close game all the way through, Paynesville rode a couple of late free throws to edge Yellow Medicine East.
YME trailed by one at the half before going down by nine points and then making it as close as two late in the game.
Kayla Schaefer scored 24 points and hit five 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1), and Abby Wuertz and Katelyn Dingmann both scored in double-digits.
Makayla Dyrdahl (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Anna McCosh (10 points, 10 rebounds) each double-doubled for YME, and Chyanne Sand added nine points and 10 boards.
The Sting (1-1, 1-1) next play Dec. 12 at ACGC, and Paynesville is at Holdingford on Thursday.

It was a disappointing season opener for MACCRAY as they fell 72-27 to Lac Qui Parle Valley on Thursday.
Kelsea Lund led the visiting Eagles with 20 points and Alaysia Freetly chipped in 16 points with eight steals. The Wolverines could never keep up as they shot 22 percent for the game and fell behind by 38 going into halftime.
LPQV plays Renville County West next Thursday, while MACCRAY will be at the Benson Christmas tournament starting today.
